Digipak Advert Analysis

The wretch32 digipak advert targets its audience through its use of style and font. The Graffiti font can stereotypically be related to the rap/grime genre, with the block of flats in the background, representing social realism and urbanism. I chose to analyse this digipak and found inspiration in it because it uses some of the same features i used in my digipak draft. Similarities include the Graffiti font, the urban setting and the artist at in the foreground of the poster, however, in my digipak draft, Kanye West is surround by the buildings which gives the impression he is being overwhelmed and could suggest he has the world on his shoulders.

The scale of the image is also interesting and in this case, the artist is the central focus of the poster. This suggests he is most important because the background is of a smaller scale. They may have also chose to centre the poster on the image of Wretch32 because he is an up and coming artist and so it is an easier way of indentifying him and making him stand out more. Kanye West on the other hand is a more iconic artist and so when making my advert; he does not necessarily need to be at the forefront.

I found inspiration in the artistic effect used on the poster because i feel like it connected the background and the foreground. The drawn and splatter effect used also makes it appear more modern and I’ve decided i will attempt to incorporate this into my final piece.

There has also been a lot of text incorporated into the digipak and the featuring artists have been listed below, possibly implying they are of less importance. His stance and clothing are also typical features of this genre and he is portraying himself as a laid back, down to earth individual of the grime culture, using the jewellery dangling from his pocket as a symbol. He is also looking away from the camera possibly to make him appear less intimidating and more humble, suggesting that the audience are onlookers and he is not fully aware.

Overall, the digipak advert has used specific conventions typically used in the grime/rap genre to successfully target and attract a specific genre.
